The choral days of Trnava

The festival "Trnavské zborové dni"/ TZD (The choral days of Trnava) was originated by the current art director of the festival TZD Dr.Gabriel Kalapoš. The first year took place in june 1988 in honour of 750th anniversary of granting TRNAVA privileges of free royal town. Eight choirs from Czech republic, Yugoslavia and Slovakia participated in it.

Community singing has rich tradition and also present in the town . The main idea of the origination of the festival was to enable mature choirs of Trnava to get in touch with choirs from other European countries and to establish a tradition of powerful international choral festival.

For several years there was also taking place a whole Slovak competition within the festival TZD - the categorization of adult choirs. The festival has had the character of competition since 1996 and since 2004 it has been intended only for mixed choirs of adults and youth. Characteristic stroke of the festival is the fact that the competing choirs can show whole broadness of their repertoires in two competitive categories - the profane and the sacral one, without outstanding dramaturgical requirements. Organizers of the festival cooperate with notable personalities of Slovak community singing such were Štefan Klimo, Ivan Hrušovský, Peter Hradil, Peter Cón, Jozef Potočár and still are Blanka Juhaňáková, Vladimír Blaho, Zdenko Mikula, Jiŕí Kollář and others.

Besides the traditional organizers - the town of Trnava, The house of culture Tirnavia, Trnava centre of education, Trnava town choirs, partake of the organization also the Ministry of Culture of the SR, the Ministry of Education of the SR, National centre of education and the Trnava Region.

During the annual volumes of the festival TZD has taken place also special seminars with specialists and workshops.

High artistic level of the festival, precious work of organizers, kind and hospitable atmosphere of the festival has already got tens of supporters - competitors of the festival TZD from whole Europe. Festival concerts are visited especially by young people, choirs sing in acustically suitable spaces. In past 19 years of existence have participated in the festival almost 200 choirs, the home ones as well as the foreign.

In 2008 organizes the Town of Trnava in support of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic the 20th. anniversary year of "THE CHORAL DAYS OF TRNAVA", which we are very pleased to invite you to.
